Reconnected
1 October - 22 October, 2022

Jang Design Art is pleased to present Reconnected, a solo exhibition of Candace Joo from October 1st (Sat) to October 22nd (Sat). Candice Zhu, who travels in various fields such as painting, sculpture, and architecture, has been working on exploring the subject of the relationship between an individual and the self and the other, and furthermore, society, using the material of the chain as a medium.

As can be seen from the title of this exhibition, Candice Joo prepared the exhibition by paying attention to the need to expand the meaning of relationship toward the self, which she has been exploring, to others and society, and to form new relationships. The chain has two meanings to the artist. One means the formation and growth of true relationships with oneself and others, and the other means resistance to escape from the social system and stereotypes that bind us. As such, for the artist, the chain is an important material for unraveling the work and a medium for conveying the subject.

Through the contrast between light and dark, the artist expressed metallic tendencies with non-metallic materials. This metallic glitter is not a hyper-realistic expression, but a product of planned coincidence based on the artist's spontaneity and unconscious flow. So, Candice Joo's works are figurative paintings depicting chains, but they are also abstract paintings.

The Reflection series expresses the emotions of relationships between people through the structure of a chain that is connected. My reflection through the sparkling chain represents me, and the connected chains represent the relationship we have in society. While the Reflection series explored the relationship between individuals through the glitter of metal, the Resistance series expressed the relationship between individuals and society by focusing more on the concept of chain bondage. The metal arch shape in the work is inspired by architectural designs such as the Arc de Triomphe, and expresses the internal conflict when passing through a new area in a rapidly changing society, focusing on how individuals who understand and accept it are connected in real society and what kind of relationship they form. do. It also contains the meaning of resistance to society's stereotypes.

The artist contemplated on what a true relationship is through the medium of a chain. We also hope that this exhibition will serve as an opportunity for us to look back on how we can seek relationships with people connected to us, and how we can recover the true relationships that this era needs through the connection and dissolution of relationships shown in the works. .
